The Opportunity:

At Canopy, we’re building a platform that transforms the way accounting firms operate—and to do that, we need to deeply understand how they work.

We’re looking for a strategic, systems-oriented User Researcher to lead discovery across the accounting firm landscape. In this role, you’ll explore, document, and synthesize the workflows, roles, tools, and behaviors that define modern tax and accounting practices. Your insights will directly inform product direction, shape the customer experience, and identify high-impact opportunities across the firm lifecycle.

This is a hands-on, high-impact role where you'll partner closely with Product Managers, Designers, Engineers, and our Go-to-Market teams to ensure we’re building smart, scalable, and deeply useful solutions for the professionals who rely on us.

What You’ll Do:

  • Lead qualitative and quantitative research across firm types, roles (e.g., firm owners, preparers, admins), and services (tax, bookkeeping, payroll, advisory).
  • Create detailed workflow maps and process documentation that capture how firms operate today—from client intake to billing and everything in between.
  • Identify user needs, behavioral patterns, tool usage, and change triggers across segments.
  • Translate research findings into actionable insights that inform product strategy, roadmap prioritization, and feature design.
  • Conduct discovery interviews, field studies, surveys, usability testing, and concept validation.
  • Develop clear research artifacts (e.g., journey maps, personas, opportunity briefs) that are easily shared and understood by cross-functional teams.
  • Partner with analytics to correlate behavioral research with usage data for a more complete picture of the customer journey.
  • Champion a culture of customer empathy across the company by regularly sharing findings and facilitating team alignment.

What We’re Looking For:

  • 4+ years of experience in user research, UX research, or a related field.
  • Strong command of qualitative research methods and familiarity with quantitative approaches.
  • Proven track record of delivering high-impact research that shapes product and business decisions.
  • Experience mapping complex workflows in B2B or professional services environments.
  • Excellent communicator and storyteller—able to distill complex behavior into meaningful insights.
  • Comfortable navigating ambiguity and working independently on end-to-end research.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills and ability to influence decisions across teams.
  • A sense of humor, empathy, confidence, and humility.
  • Hybrid schedule: M,W,F in office and T,Th optional remote

Bonus Points If You Have:

  • Experience in the B2B fintech space and/or an accounting background.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Computer Science, Accounting, or a related field.
